Shop Patterns →✨ **Grading Seam Allowances**
You saw how trimming seam allowances in layers helps reduce bulk. At thick seams (like boxed corners or seamjoins), cut the outer fabric to ¼", and trim the lining slightly narrower. Press open after trimming — this flattens the seam beautifully and helps the bag keep its shape.
✨ **Installing a Magnetic Snap**
You learned how to mark, cut, and reinforce your snap placement so it’s perfectly centered. Remember to add a scrap of foam for reinforcement before attaching the prongs, and fuse a small scrap of interfacing behind the snap area. This keeps the snap from tearing through fabric over time.
✨ **Adding Lining Pockets**
You practiced sewing pocket panels using my binding pocket method. A great way to use leftover binding! always use a slightly longer topstitch and match your thread color to your pocket or binding for a seamless look.
✨ **Pressing Every Step**
Pressing makes a world of difference! You saw how pressing seams open before joining panels helps them sit flatter, while pressing after topstitching gives your edges that crisp, professional look.
✨ **Using the Right Needle & Thread**
If your machine starts to “thunk” or skip stitches, it’s not mad — it’s underpowered. Switch to a 90/14 for layers or a 100/16 for cork or faux leather. And remember: polyester thread is your friend! It’s strong, flexible, and perfect for bag seams that need to last.
✨ **1️⃣ Grade Your Seams**
Trim layers in steps — exterior widest, lining narrower, interfacing narrowest. Smooth seams = a cleaner, more professional finish.
✨ **2️⃣ Fuse with Intention**
Press your interfacing in place — don’t slide your iron. Let it cool before moving to the next step for lasting structure.
✨ **3️⃣ Layer for Structure**
Mix and match interfacings for the feel you want. SF101 adds stability, Thermolam gives body, and Fusible Fleece softens the shape.
✨ **4️⃣ Control Your Stitching**
Slow down, lengthen your topstitch (around 3.0–3.5 mm), and sew evenly. Confident stitching is the hallmark of a polished bag.
✨ **5️⃣ Taper the Lining**
Sew the lining with a slightly larger seam allowance and taper near the top edge so it fits snugly inside without sagging.
