The Beginner Bagmaker’s Hack for Perfect Zipper Pocket Placement (That Actually Works)

The Beginner Bagmaker’s Hack for Perfect Zipper Pocket Placement (That Actually Works)

by Amanda Whisman June 30, 2025

Let’s talk about zipper pockets.

If you’re a beginner bagmaker and just reading that phrase makes you tense up… you’re not alone. When I first started sewing bags, I avoided zipper pockets like the plague. Not because I didn’t like how they looked (because who doesn’t love a good, sleek zipper pocket?)—but because mine always ended up crooked, puckered, or just plain sad.

The Problem:

I’d try to pin the zipper in place inside the bag lining, carefully holding it down while sewing… only for it to shift halfway through and look like a 2-year-old helped out. (No offense to toddlers. Y’all are great with snacks, not so much with stitching.)

But then I discovered a tool that completely changed the game for me:

👉 Double-sided sewing tape.

What is double-sided sewing tape, and why is it magical?

(Okay, maybe not magical, but it’s close.)

Double-sided sewing tape is a thin strip of adhesive made specifically for fabric. It’s different from regular craft or office tape because it won’t permanently gum up your machine, and it washes out or softens over time. I personally use the Dritz brand and haven’t had any issues with sticky needles or skipped stitches. (More on that below!)

How I Use Double-Sided Tape to Sew Zipper Pockets Perfectly (Every. Time.)

  1. Prep your bag lining as usual: cut your zipper opening, mark your placement, and press the edges open.  (A separate tutorial coming on this soon!!!)
  2. Cut a strip of double-sided sewing tape and stick it to the right side of your zipper tape—stay close to the top and bottom edge, but not where your needle will sew.
  3. Peel and stick the zipper behind the opening in your lining. Adjust until it’s just right (this tape gives you a little wiggle room before it really grabs).
  4. Sew it down! The tape holds everything in place so your zipper doesn’t shift, wrinkle, or slide as you stitch.

💡 Pro tip: If you’re using a different brand of tape and your needle feels sticky or you’re getting skipped stitches, try:

  • Swapping in a fresh needle
  • Using a non-stick (Teflon) needle
  • Placing the tape just outside the stitch line

Where can I get this magical tape?

Glad you asked. I use this one from Amazon:

Why This Matters for Beginners

Here’s the thing: no one tells beginner bagmakers that there’s a middle ground between “I hate zippers” and “I’ve mastered couture-level finishes.”

This is it.

Double-sided tape gives you that clean, confident, professional look without the frustration. It takes one of the trickiest steps in beginner bag sewing and actually makes it easier.

If you’ve been avoiding zipper bags or skipping zipper pockets in patterns because you’re worried they’ll look homemade—try this. Seriously.
