The Easy Strap Upgrade That Makes Your Handmade Bags Look Store-Bought

How to Sew a Rolled Handle—No Hardware Needed

Want to take your bag straps from “fine” to fabulous? This one simple trick—called a rolled handle—adds a clean, polished finish to your straps with zero extra hardware and just a few extra stitches.

Whether you’re sewing a tote bag, lunch bag, or zipper pouch, this beginner-friendly handle technique gives your project a more professional look without requiring any fancy equipment.

What Is a Rolled Handle?

A rolled handle is a built-in grab handle formed by folding and securing a section of the strap back onto itself. It creates a padded, easy-to-hold section—similar to what you'd find on a high-end tote or structured handbag.

What makes it great for beginners?
✔️ No need for interfacing, foam, or rivets
✔️ Works with fabric straps or pre-made webbing
✔️ Completely doable on a basic home sewing machine

This technique adds both function and flair—and once you try it, you’ll want to use it on all your bag projects.

Why Beginner Bagmakers Should Try It

If you're just starting out in bagmaking, it’s easy to think professional details are out of reach. But the rolled handle proves that small, smart changes make a big difference.

In this technique, you’ll:

  • Improve the comfort and durability of your straps
  • Add a professional finish that makes people say, "Wait—you made that?!"
  • Build skills you can apply across all kinds of projects

This strap upgrade for handmade bags works especially well on totes, lunch bags, and pouches—and you can customize the size of the rolled section to match your project.

Supplies You'll Need

  • Fabric or pre-made webbing straps
  • Thread to match or contrast
  • Clips
  • Basic sewing machine
  • Optional: Heavier needle (like 90/14 or 100/16) for thicker straps
(💡 I talk more about needle types and materials in my Sew Better Bags eBook.)

I have been wanting to make a bag for a very long time but I’m afraid I might mess it up. I’m not good with zippers.
