How to Install Magnetic Snaps in Bags (Step-by-Step Tutorial)

How to Install Magnetic Snaps in Bags (Step-by-Step Tutorial)

Magnetic snaps don't have to feel scary—this is the exact method I use to install them cleanly and securely in my bags.

If you've ever hesitated mid-project when it's time to add a magnetic snap, you're not alone. They can feel intimidating at first, but once you understand the process, they're actually one of the simplest closures to install. In this tutorial, I'll walk you through exactly how I install prong-style magnetic snaps so they're secure, neat, and positioned correctly every time.

Watch the Full Video Tutorial

I demonstrate the entire process step-by-step using the Starry Tote Bag as an example. This technique works for any bag where you need a magnetic snap—whether you're sewing a tote, lunch bag, or structured handbag.

What You'll Need

Before you start, gather these supplies:

  • Prong-style magnetic snaps (I use these magnetic snaps)
  • Your bag fabric and interfacing
  • A seam ripper (for making clean holes)
  • Fray Block
  • Small washers (usually included with the snap set)
  • Scrap piece of foam interfacing
  • Lightweight interfacing

The Installation Process

Prong-style magnetic snaps install the same way on both sides, so once you learn this method, you can apply it anywhere a magnetic snap is needed in your bag or flap.

Here's the basic process I follow:

  1. Mark your placement: Determine where you want the snap to sit and mark the prong positions carefully.
  2. Cut clean slits: Use a seam ripper to make small, precise holes for the prongs. Use Fray Block to keep the fabric slits from running.
  3. Insert the snap: Push the prongs through from the right side of your fabric.
  4. Secure with washers: Place a scrap piece of foam interfacing through the prongs on the backside. Then place the washer over the prongs on the wrong side and bend the prongs outward to lock everything in place.
  5. Adhere lightweight interfacing to keep prongs from poking through.

The key is taking your time with placement and making clean, accurate holes. Rushing this step can lead to wonky positioning or fabric damage.

Why This Method Works

This technique ensures your magnetic snaps are:

  • Secure: Properly installed snaps won't pull out or loosen over time
  • Neat: Clean holes and careful placement mean a professional finish
  • Functional: Correctly aligned snaps close smoothly every time

When to Use Magnetic Snaps

Magnetic snaps are perfect for:

  • Tote bags with flaps
  • Lunch bags and insulated carriers
  • Crossbody bags and purses
  • Clutches and pouches
  • Any bag where you want a secure, easy-to-use closure

Try It on the Starry Tote Bag

If you want to practice this technique on a beginner-friendly project, check out the Starry Tote Bag sewing pattern—it's the bag I use in the video tutorial and it's a great way to build your bagmaking confidence.
