How to Sew Zipper Tabs the Easy Way

by Amanda Whisman August 18, 2025

How to Sew Zipper Tabs the Easy Way

Have you ever finished sewing a bag only to realize your zipper ends look bulky, uneven, or just plain wonky? You’re not alone. This is one of the most common beginner struggles in bagmaking—and the good news is, there’s a super simple fix: zipper tabs.

Zipper tabs are small pieces of fabric sewn onto each end of a zipper. They take just a couple of minutes to add, but they make a huge difference in both how your zipper looks and how easy it is to sew into your bag. Once you try them, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them.

Why Use Zipper Tabs?

When you sew a zipper directly into a bag without tabs, the bulky ends often get caught in seams. This can make your corners look lumpy and cause the zipper to pucker or pull out of shape.

By adding tabs, you:

  • Create a flat, clean finish at each end of the zipper.
  • Reduce bulk in your seams, making sewing smoother.
  • Ensure the zipper fits the bag opening exactly.
  • Instantly upgrade your bag from “homemade” to “store-bought.”

For beginners, zipper tabs are one of those small tricks that unlock a whole new level of confidence.

Common Beginner Mistakes with Zippers

If you’ve ever struggled with:

  • Zippers that feel too short or too long for the opening,
  • Bag corners that look bunched up,
  • A zipper that’s difficult to open and close once installed…

…it’s probably because you skipped this step.

Adding zipper tabs solves all of these problems in one go.

Step-by-Step Video Tutorial

Instead of just telling you about it, let me show you how easy zipper tabs are. I created a quick step-by-step video that walks you through the entire process.
