Back-to-School Sewing Projects: Useful Patterns for Students, Teachers & More

Back-to-school sewing isn't just for kids heading into a classroom.

Teachers are getting ready for another year. College students are moving into new routines. Teenagers are getting driver's licenses. Lunches need to be packed again. And somehow everyone suddenly needs a tote, pouch, pencil case, or somewhere to keep all the little things they carry around every day.

And if you're a sewist, you know exactly what happens next.

I could make that.

I'm Amanda, the bagmaker and pattern designer behind Be Mandy Things, and I've rounded up some of my favorite useful sewing projects for this time of year. You'll find everything from a lunchbox and roomy totes to quick zipper pouches and a free project you can make for that brand-new driver in your life.

Some can be sewn in an afternoon. Others make a great weekend project. And every one of them can keep getting used long after the first day of school.

Let's Eat Lunchbox: Because Lunch Should Stay Upright

The Let's Eat Lunchbox exists because I needed one myself.

When I worked as a special education assistant, I was tired of lunch bags that required me to turn my containers sideways and hope I didn't find half my soup spilled before lunch. I wanted a lunchbox with a wide bottom that would let my containers sit upright.

So I designed one.

Let's Eat has a roomy base, structured shape, flap with a magnetic snap, and side buckles to help keep everything secure. You can also use insulated batting and waterproof canvas for the lining to make it even more lunch-friendly.

It's useful for students, teachers, school staff, college students, or anyone who packs a lunch for work.

Because nobody wants to open their lunchbox and discover that lunch has been traveling upside down since 7:30 that morning.

Sunset Zipper Pouch: Hello, Pencil Case

The Sunset Zipper Pouch might not have been designed specifically as a pencil case, but its longer shape makes it pretty darn good at the job.

Pencils, pens, markers, art supplies, small rulers and other longer items fit nicely inside. And when school days are over, it can easily become a pouch for sewing tools, makeup, charging cords or whatever else needs corralling.

It's also a much quicker project than making an entire bag, which makes Sunset a great option when you want to sew a useful back-to-school gift without giving up your entire weekend.

Frankie Zipper Pouch: For All the Little Stuff
