Just in time for July 4th, this patriotic Starry Tote isn’t just festive—it’s a fun project that teaches quilting and bagmaking skills you’ll use all year long. I pulled out this red, white, and blue fabric bundle and instantly knew it needed to become a summer tote—something cute and practical for BBQs and beach days. With the 4th of July just around the corner, it felt like the perfect time to sew a festive version of my Starry Tote Bag Pattern using patriotic prints from the Breezeway collection by Maywood Studio.
But this pattern isn’t just a one-time holiday sew—it’s a solid, go-to tote bag that teaches you real skills you can use again and again, whether you’re quilting, bagmaking, or doing both.
The Starry Tote is a roomy, functional bag with three interior slip pockets and a standout quilt block panel right on the front. It’s fun to make, easy to customize, and big enough to carry all the things—picnic snacks, towels, sunscreen, you name it.
And yes, it looks impressive. But it’s also 100% beginner-friendly, whether you’re more confident with bagmaking or quilting.
Here’s what this pattern helps you learn (and get comfortable doing):
If you're someone who has quilted but feels unsure about bagmaking (or vice versa), this pattern is a perfect bridge between the two.
For the quilt block on this tote, I chose to quilt with simple, straight stitches spaced about an inch apart. This clean, classic look lets the star design really pop without adding bulk or complicated quilting lines. Plus, straight-line quilting is beginner-friendly and easy to sew on your home machine.
One thing that makes this bag stand out is how it keeps its shape and stands up on its own—not all quilted bags do! That’s because this pattern skips batting entirely. Instead, it uses a sturdy woven interfacing, which provides just the right amount of structure without the fluff. This means your tote will hold up to beach days, picnics, and BBQs without sagging or losing form.
Sometimes it’s the little things that take a project from “just finished” to “actually fabulous.” Inside the Starry Tote, you’ll find three roomy slip pockets—perfect for stashing your phone, snacks, sunglasses, or whatever else you want easy access to at a summer picnic or beach day.
But what really makes these pockets shine? The binding.
In this pattern, I walk you through my go-to method for binding pocket edges so they look crisp, clean, and professional. It's one of those techniques that makes your bag feel store-bought, not handmade—and once you try it, you’ll want to use it again and again.
This is especially helpful for beginner bagmakers or quilters crossing into bagmaking—you’ll feel proud of the inside of your bag, not just the outside.
One of the best things about this pattern is how customizable it is. You get to play with fabric placement inside the star block to create different effects, and you can finish your tote with whatever materials you like—cotton webbing, cork, or, in this case, leather handles.
I used these exact ones from Springfield Leather Company, and curved the ends using my Half Round Leather Punch. Check out my Leather Craft Favorites Amazon Page for this amazing tool and everything else I use with leather. I installed the leather straps with rivets (easy with the right tools—find mine here or in my free PDF of favorite small shops).
If you’re looking for a pattern that’s satisfying to sew and teaches you new skills—but doesn’t leave you overwhelmed—Starry might be your next favorite make.
Whether you’re pulling from scraps or sewing from a new fat quarter bundle (like this Breezeway one I got during my Maywood Studio ambassadorship), the star block helps tie all your prints together into one bold focal point.
You can also get just the Shining Star Quilt Block Pattern and turn it into a pillow, wall hanging, mini quilt, or patriotic table topper.
