3 Quick Bagmaking Upgrades That Make Handmade Bags Look More Professional

After years of teaching bagmaking, I've noticed something.

The biggest confidence boost doesn't happen when someone finishes their first bag.

It happens when they turn it right side out and realize...

"This is the nicest bag I've ever made."

That's when the questions start.

"What did I do differently?"

The answer is almost never one big thing.

It's usually three or four small techniques that completely change the finished bag.

1. Lengthen your topstitching

Topstitching is one of the first things people notice, even if they don't realize it.

For construction seams, I use one stitch length, usually between a 2.0 & 2.5mm. But before I topstitch, I almost always increase it to around 3.5 mm.

That slightly longer stitch creates smoother, more defined topstitching that frames the bag beautifully.

It's one of the quickest upgrades you can make, and it only takes a few seconds to change the setting on your machine.

2. Grade your seam allowances

Ever struggle to get a corner to turn nicely?

Most of the time, the problem isn't your sewing.

It's the bulk hiding inside the seam.

Grading your seam allowances removes unnecessary layers so they nest together instead of fighting each other. That means cleaner corners, smoother edges, and a bag that feels more professionally finished.

It's one of those techniques that's easy to overlook until you see the difference for yourself.

3. Give your lining a snug fit

A beautiful bag deserves a lining that fits just as well.

One of my favorite little tricks is tapering the lining slightly before assembling the bag.

It's a small adjustment, but it helps the lining sit neatly inside the bag instead of sagging or pulling out every time you reach inside.

Most people won't know why your bag looks so nice.

They'll just notice that it does.

This is one of those "aha!" techniques that completely changed the way my bags looked. I teach it step by step inside Sew Better Bags, along with dozens of other tips I've learned over the years.

The little things changed everything for me.
